Hanging of the Greens
Jon Campbell singing with his choir at Creivewood United Methodist
The first weekend of December we decorated the house for Christmas. Jin is fascinated with everything and this time was no different. He loves the different colored ornaments and wanted to touch every one. Papa has a collection of Misfit Toy ornaments and finger puppets that were a huge hit. Jon Campbell claimed to be Frosty and Jin was Santa.
Many, many years ago my Great Uncle Carl built a manger which we set out and fill with a beautiful nativity set my brother gave us our first married Christmas. Both boys wanted to place the baby Jesus in his hay bed of course. All of this has been Jin's first encounter with Christmas. In China, Christmas is not celebrated except for the younger generation which is beginning to now to obseve this western holiday. While in China, Starbucks was decorated for Christmas. The hoilday menu included a fantastic Chocolate Covered Cherry Mocha. Yummy :) We explained to Jin, in the most simple of words, the story of Baby Jesus' birth. Jon Campbell helped us share the beautiful story and instructed Jin to repeat after him several important terms. Now, no matter where we go if Jin sees a nativity scene you will hear him blurt out at the top of lungs..."Baby Jesus!"
We often wonder does he get it? What is he actually understanding day to day. I know I am a proud parent and I should not boast, but he is very smart. We all love Christmas lights so one Sunday night we took the scenic route home and passed by many homes decked out in an array of colored lights. Out of the blue and without any prompting Jin says, "How beautiful!"
